Alethea Byers is the acting Director of Family and Social Services Division (formerly Citizens’ Welfare Division) in the Ministry of Social Transformation & Human Resource Development.
Byers has been working with families and youth for over twenty (20) years. More so, with Antigua and Barbuda Probation Unit for approximately 15 years providing Social Inquiry Reports and psychosocial assessment to the Courts. She holds a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree in Clinical Social work with specialization in trauma & violence; BSc. In Social Work (Hons) and Criminology from the University of the West Indies, Mona. Byers has completed several Certificates training in Child’s Rights, Human Rights, Restorative Practices, Aggression Replacement Training (ART), and Byers has extensive work experience in program administration, community mental health and trauma resolution counseling.
Byers is committed to the mental health and wellbeing of individuals. Byers is also a consultant/facilitator for CARICOM and USAID/OECS on making presentation on parenting, Child Protection issues, Mentorship and Character-building. Further In her public/private practice, Byers assists clients coping with depression, anxiety, relationship issues and sexual trauma. Byers utilizes a blend of cognitive behavioral and client centered therapy while also incorporating elements of the Connelly Method of multi-level communication. These advanced methods promote healing and desired change in a unique, gentle and respectful manner.
Byers continues to be recognized for her skillful presentations and enduring commitment to the profession by the Ministry of social Transformation and Human Resource Development. Byers is a popular workshop leader and speaker who combines solid research and experience with humor to create positive learning experiences.
